"We never look at just one thing; we are always looking at the relation between things and ourselves." ~ John Berger, Ways of Seeing

A home is a space where we receive others, but it is also our cocoon, a refuge from the outside world. The challenge for a designer is to reconcile these opposing realities in order to wholly reflect the people who live there.

As a former dancer and choreographer, it is natural for me to see parallels between the art of dance making and that of designing spaces. This connection influences how I envision movement, flow and light, but also, say, the height + shape of a sofa, the choice of textiles and most especially, colors. These elements, together, give breath to the places we call home and reflect so much about ourselves. The interiors become the 'stage,' a part of the 'theatre' of our unique, domestic lives.

I am very partial to the marriage of different styles; to create a conversation between cultures and eras in design. But taste is something deeply personal, imbued with the history of each individual. I try to help my clients write their own story, to acknowledge + feel confident in their own taste. Then together, we can create a beautiful home that the client will love + enjoy, making them feel happy every time they look at it.

This is Maureen Ellenhorn. A woman with short dark hair, wearing glasses and a bright pink blouse, sitting on a wicker chair against a brick wall, smiling and holding a cup.
